January 21: Jeremiah 2:2 - Recall What God Remembers (Today's Reflection from My Utmost For His Highest)
Daily Bible Verse: Jeremiah 2:2 (NLT)
"... I remember how eager you were to please Me, how you loved Me and followed Me..."
There are moments in Scripture when God’s voice feels almost wistful—when He speaks not in thunder, but in memory. Today’s reading from Oswald Chambers invites us into that tender space. It asks us to pause long enough to hear what God remembers about us.
Chambers presses a simple but searching question:
Am I as kind toward God as I once was?
Not dutiful, not obedient, not busy for Him—but kind.
Spontaneously kind.
Overflowing-with-love kind.
The kind of devotion that once rose up without calculation or hesitation.
It’s uncomfortable to admit how easily that early love can fade into something more measured. We begin to expect God’s kindness while offering little of our own. We complain when life bends in directions we didn’t choose. We forget that Jesus Himself once said, “Give Me a drink.” (John 4:7) He has needs we can meet—attention, affection, trust, surrender.
Chambers reminds us that God sometimes says to His people:
“You are not in love with Me now, but I remember when you were.”
That line stops me.
Because God is not scolding—He is remembering.
He is recalling the days when our hearts were soft, when we followed Him simply because we loved Him, not because we were measuring outcomes or watching who noticed our service.
And then comes the harder truth:
When I recall what God remembers about me, I may realize that He is not what He used to be to me. Not because He has changed, but because my love has cooled.
That realization is meant to humble us, not crush us.
Scripture calls it godly sorrow—the kind that leads not to despair, but to repentance, renewal, and restored intimacy. (2 Corinthians 7:10)
Today is an invitation to return.
Not to the past, but to the posture of the past.
To the simplicity of first love.
To the joy of kindness freely given.
To the God who remembers—and who welcomes us back with open arms.
Be Still and Know
Let the Spirit bring to mind the early tenderness of your walk with God.
Let Him rekindle what once burned bright.
Prayer
Father, soften my heart.
Restore my joy.
Forgive me.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Breath Prayer
Inhale: You remember me, Lord.
Exhale: Restore my first love.
Benediction
Walking in the kindness God remembers.
