March 22: Luke 24:32 - The Heart That Holds the Flame (Today's Reflection from My Utmost For His Highest)

An open hand creadles a glowing ember in the palm, surrounded by soft darkness and rising sparks.

Luke 24:32
"Did not our heart burn within us ...?"

Reflection
There are moments when Christ draws near and something in us ignites — a sudden warmth, an awareness, a holy fire that makes everything feel sharp and alive. The disciples on the Emmaus road knew that feeling: “Did not our heart burn within us…?” It is the unmistakable touch of God, the kindling only the Spirit can do.
But the true secret of the burning heart is not the moment of ignition.

It is the keeping.

Anyone can burn on the mountaintop.
It is the ordinary day — the dishes, the errands, the quiet responsibilities, the familiar faces — that tries to smother the flame. And unless we learn to abide in Jesus, the fire flickers out under the weight of the commonplace.

Much of our inner distress does not come from sin, but from not understanding our own nature. Emotions are powerful forces, and they must be examined by their end. If an emotion, followed to its conclusion, leads us away from God, we must extinguish it quickly. But if the Spirit Himself has kindled it, and we refuse to let it rise to its proper height, it collapses into something smaller, more distorted, more self‑focused than God intended.

This is how overly emotional, unstable spiritual lives are formed — not because the emotion was wrong, but because it was never allowed to reach its rightful purpose.

When God gives you a vision, a stirring, a holy fire, make decisions while the flame is bright. Let them be irrevocable. Let the consequences unfold as they must. We cannot stay on the mount of transfiguration, basking in the light, but we can obey the light we received there.

The burning heart is not a moment.
It is a way of walking —
a steady flame carried through hours of gloom,
because it was first willed in hours of insight.

Prayer
Lord, kindle my heart with Your presence, and teach me how to keep the flame.
Guard me from emotions that lead me astray, and strengthen every holy stirring You ignite within me.
Help me obey the light You give, even when the day grows dull and the path grows dim.
Keep my heart burning with steady devotion.
In Jesus name, Amen.

Breath Prayer
Inhale: Kindle my heart
Exhale: Keep me devoted

May His flame steady you through every ordinary hour.

Present (John 14:9)

Today's Reading: My Utmost for His Highest Devotional of the Day — Home Page John 14:9 "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?" ...He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Philip stood in front of Jesus and still asked to see the Father. Jesus told him that seeing Him was seeing the Father. God was right there, and Philip didn’t recognize Him. We are the same way. God is with us, guiding us, steadying us, revealing Himself in quiet ways — yet we often look for something dramatic. Faith is trusting the God we cannot see, the God who is already here.   Philip wasn't asking out of rebellion.  Philip was asking out of longing — the same longing we feel. But Jesus’ response reveals something deeper:  “Have I been with you so long, and you still don’t know Me?” We want to see God with our eyes, hear Him with our ears, and sense His nearness the way we sense another person in the room. That is hum...

Meaning of Forgiveness: Key Bible Verses, Jesus' Command to Forgive, How to Forgive, and a Prayer

Devotional of the Day — Home Page Summary:  Meaning of Forgiveness Forgiveness is at the center of the gospel — Jesus commands it, models it, and makes it possible through His sacrifice. We are forgiven of every sin, even those not yet committed, and invited to receive His grace with childlike humility. Because God has forgiven us so completely, we are called to release grudges, let go of past hurts, and forgive others from the heart. Forgiveness does not require confronting anyone; it is a private act between you and God, a cleansing that frees your spirit. When forgiveness feels impossible, we can lay our pain at His feet and ask Him to remove the bitterness we cannot overcome alone. Sometimes the hardest forgiveness is toward ourselves, but Jesus meets us there too. God invites us to surrender every burden and receive His healing grace. Dec 2: 1 Peter 5:7 Do Not Worry (Daily Verse & Prayer)

Devotional of the Day — Home Page 1 Peter 5:7 "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you ." — KJV Worry has a way of creeping into our hearts, especially when life feels uncertain. Yet this verse reminds us that we are not meant to carry the weight alone. God’s care is not distant or abstract — it is personal, tender, and constant. Every detail of our lives matters to Him. When we release our burdens into His hands, we exchange anxiety for peace. It doesn’t mean the challenges disappear, but it does mean we walk through them with courage, knowi ng the Lord is holding us steady. Today, let us practice surrender by naming our worries and laying them before Him, trusting His love to carry what we cannot. Prayer Father, I lay my worries at Your feet.  Please give me calm for my mind and courage for my work, and remind me -   You hold every detail.  In Jesus' precious, holy name I pray, Amen.  I pray your day be free from worry and your mind calm, ~ Quil ...
