February 18: Matthew 26:46 - When Jesus Stands Us Back on Our Feet (Today's Reflection from My Utmost For His Highest)

A quiet forest path opening into soft morning light, with mist hanging between the trees and the way ahead gently brightened.

Bible Verse

Matthew 26:46

"Rise, let us be going"

Reflection

There is a particular kind of despair that settles in when we realize we have failed at something we cannot undo. The disciples knew that feeling in Gethsemane. They slept through the one hour Jesus asked them to watch. And when they woke, the weight of it must have crushed them — the sense of having missed a holy moment, of having disappointed the One they loved most.

We know that feeling too.
The moment we say, “It’s ruined now… what’s the point in trying anymore.”
It is such an ordinary human ache, yet it feels so final when we’re in it.

But Jesus does something astonishing in that garden.
He does not scold.
He does not rehearse their failure.
He does not ask them to fix what cannot be fixed.

He simply says, “Rise, let us be going.”

There is such mercy in that sentence.
He acknowledges the loss — the opportunity is gone — yet He refuses to let the past define the next step. He gathers His disciples, folds their failure into His own redeeming love, and leads them forward into the future only He can see.

This is how He meets us too.

When despair has hollowed us out…
When we cannot lift ourselves…
When we are certain our missteps have disqualified us…

He comes with spiritual initiative — His, not ours — and whispers, “Get up. Do the next thing with Me.”

The next thing is rarely dramatic.
It is usually trust.
It is usually prayer.
It is usually placing our trembling hand back into His and letting Him lead us into the invincible future He has already secured.

Never let the sense of past failure defeat your next step.
Let the past sleep in the sweet embrace of Christ, and rise with Him into what comes next.

Prayer

Lord,
You know the places where despair has settled in me,
where regret has taken root,
where I have believed the lie that it is too late.
Speak Your gentle command over me again:
“Rise, let us be going.”
Lift my eyes from what cannot be changed
and anchor my heart in Your redeeming love.
Give me courage for the next step,
and let me walk it with You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

Breath Prayer

Inhale: You lift me up.
Exhale: I rise with You.

Benediction

May the mercy of Christ quiet every voice of despair.
May His presence steady your trembling places.
May His initiative become your strength,
and may you rise — not by your own resolve,
but by the One who calls you forward
into a future held entirely in His hands.

Present (John 14:9)

Today's Reading: My Utmost for His Highest Devotional of the Day — Home Page John 14:9 "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?" ...He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Philip stood in front of Jesus and still asked to see the Father. Jesus told him that seeing Him was seeing the Father. God was right there, and Philip didn’t recognize Him. We are the same way. God is with us, guiding us, steadying us, revealing Himself in quiet ways — yet we often look for something dramatic. Faith is trusting the God we cannot see, the God who is already here.   Philip wasn't asking out of rebellion.  Philip was asking out of longing — the same longing we feel. But Jesus’ response reveals something deeper:  “Have I been with you so long, and you still don’t know Me?” We want to see God with our eyes, hear Him with our ears, and sense His nearness the way we sense another person in the room. Meaning of Forgiveness: Key Bible Verses, Jesus' Command to Forgive, How to Forgive, and a Prayer

Devotional of the Day — Home Page Summary:  Meaning of Forgiveness Forgiveness is at the center of the gospel — Jesus commands it, models it, and makes it possible through His sacrifice. We are forgiven of every sin, even those not yet committed, and invited to receive His grace with childlike humility. Because God has forgiven us so completely, we are called to release grudges, let go of past hurts, and forgive others from the heart. Forgiveness does not require confronting anyone; it is a private act between you and God, a cleansing that frees your spirit. When forgiveness feels impossible, we can lay our pain at His feet and ask Him to remove the bitterness we cannot overcome alone. Sometimes the hardest forgiveness is toward ourselves, but Jesus meets us there too. God invites us to surrender every burden and receive His healing grace. Dec 2: 1 Peter 5:7 Do Not Worry (Daily Verse & Prayer)

Devotional of the Day — Home Page 1 Peter 5:7 "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you ." — KJV Worry has a way of creeping into our hearts, especially when life feels uncertain. Yet this verse reminds us that we are not meant to carry the weight alone. God’s care is not distant or abstract — it is personal, tender, and constant. Every detail of our lives matters to Him. When we release our burdens into His hands, we exchange anxiety for peace. It doesn’t mean the challenges disappear, but it does mean we walk through them with courage, knowi ng the Lord is holding us steady. Today, let us practice surrender by naming our worries and laying them before Him, trusting His love to carry what we cannot. Prayer Father, I lay my worries at Your feet.  Please give me calm for my mind and courage for my work, and remind me -   You hold every detail.  In Jesus' precious, holy name I pray, Amen.  I pray your day be free from worry and your mind calm, ~ Quil ...
