February 21: Mark 14:6 - A Love That Goes Beyond Ourselves (Today's Reflection from My Utmost For His Highest)

An open hand in soft shadowed light, resting in a quiet posture of surrender.

Bible Verse

Mark 14:6 KJV

And Jesus said, "Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me."

(But Jesus replied, "Leave her alone. Why berate her for doing such a good thing to me?" NLT)

Reflection

There is a kind of love that stays safe—measured, cautious, respectable. It keeps its balance. It counts the cost. It never risks misunderstanding. It never pours out more than seems reasonable.

And then there is the love Mary carried into that room in Bethany—love that does not calculate, love that does not protect itself, love that moves straight toward Jesus with a gift that makes no sense to anyone but Him.

Chambers presses the question gently but firmly:
Do you really love Him?
Not in sentiment. Not in admiration. Not in warm thoughts about redemption.
But in a way that takes you beyond yourself.

True love for Christ always has a way of slipping past usefulness and landing in surrender. It is not driven by duty or reward or spiritual ambition. It is not concerned with being effective or impressive. It is simply love answering Love.

Mary’s act was not strategic. It was not “helpful.” It was not a ministry plan.
It was a gift—small in the world’s eyes, extravagant in His.
And Jesus received it as something done to Him, not merely for Him.

There are moments when God seems to watch for these small offerings—quiet obediences, hidden sacrifices, unnoticed choices that reveal where our affection truly rests. Not to test us, but to draw us into the freedom of perfect love, where fear loses its grip and self‑conscious holiness fades.

Holiness is not the point.
Usefulness is not the point.
Being impressive is not the point.

The point is Christ—
and the love that moves us toward Him with open hands.

When we are surrendered, He works through us without strain.
When we are yielded, He receives even the smallest gift as something of value.
When we love Him beyond ourselves, our lives become a quiet fragrance in His presence.

Prayer

Lord,
draw me into the kind of love that does not measure or hesitate.
Free me from the fear of being ineffective,
from the pressure to appear holy,
from the self‑concern that keeps my hands closed.
Teach me the beauty of small obediences—
the hidden gifts that only You see,
the quiet offerings that say,
“I love You more than myself.”
Let my life be a fragrance poured out,
not to prove anything,
but simply because You are worthy.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

Breath Prayer

Inhale: My love belongs to You
Exhale: My life is Yours to receive

May His love draw you into the quiet freedom of surrender.

Present (John 14:9)

Today's Reading: My Utmost for His Highest Devotional of the Day — Home Page John 14:9 "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?" ...He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Philip stood in front of Jesus and still asked to see the Father. Jesus told him that seeing Him was seeing the Father. God was right there, and Philip didn’t recognize Him. We are the same way. God is with us, guiding us, steadying us, revealing Himself in quiet ways — yet we often look for something dramatic. Faith is trusting the God we cannot see, the God who is already here.   Philip wasn't asking out of rebellion.  Philip was asking out of longing — the same longing we feel. But Jesus’ response reveals something deeper:  “Have I been with you so long, and you still don’t know Me?” We want to see God with our eyes, hear Him with our ears, and sense His nearness the way we sense another person in the room. Meaning of Forgiveness: Key Bible Verses, Jesus' Command to Forgive, How to Forgive, and a Prayer

Devotional of the Day — Home Page Summary:  Meaning of Forgiveness Forgiveness is at the center of the gospel — Jesus commands it, models it, and makes it possible through His sacrifice. We are forgiven of every sin, even those not yet committed, and invited to receive His grace with childlike humility. Because God has forgiven us so completely, we are called to release grudges, let go of past hurts, and forgive others from the heart. Forgiveness does not require confronting anyone; it is a private act between you and God, a cleansing that frees your spirit. When forgiveness feels impossible, we can lay our pain at His feet and ask Him to remove the bitterness we cannot overcome alone. Sometimes the hardest forgiveness is toward ourselves, but Jesus meets us there too. God invites us to surrender every burden and receive His healing grace. Dec 2: 1 Peter 5:7 Do Not Worry (Daily Verse & Prayer)

Devotional of the Day — Home Page 1 Peter 5:7 "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you ." — KJV Worry has a way of creeping into our hearts, especially when life feels uncertain. Yet this verse reminds us that we are not meant to carry the weight alone. God’s care is not distant or abstract — it is personal, tender, and constant. Every detail of our lives matters to Him. When we release our burdens into His hands, we exchange anxiety for peace. It doesn’t mean the challenges disappear, but it does mean we walk through them with courage, knowi ng the Lord is holding us steady. Today, let us practice surrender by naming our worries and laying them before Him, trusting His love to carry what we cannot. Prayer Father, I lay my worries at Your feet.  Please give me calm for my mind and courage for my work, and remind me -   You hold every detail.  In Jesus' precious, holy name I pray, Amen.  I pray your day be free from worry and your mind calm, ~ Quil ...
