Today's Reading: My Utmost for His Highest
Matthew 5:26
“You will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.”
When God Brings us Into the Light
There are moments when the Holy Spirit puts His finger on something in our hearts — a conversation we avoided, a wrong attitude we excused, a quiet disobedience we tried to ignore. When that happens, Jesus urges us to respond immediately. Not later. Not eventually. Now.
Chambers reminds us that God does not allow even a corner of darkness to remain in a heart He is purifying. Not because He is harsh, but because He is loving. His goal is not to punish us — His goal is to make us whole. When we resist His conviction, a painful inner process begins. Not because God is angry, but because the soul cannot rest while holding onto something God is trying to free us from.
The “penalty” Jesus speaks of is not God’s wrath — it is the inner unrest that comes from delaying obedience. The moment we surrender, the moment we say, “Yes, Lord, I will make this right,” His recreating power begins to work. He moves heaven and earth to help us walk in the light.
These teachings are not meant for our intellect — they are meant for our conscience. If we argue with them in our minds, we dull the Spirit’s gentle appeal to our hearts. Growth stalls. Peace fades. We begin to wonder why we feel stuck.
But the way forward is simple:
Do now what you know you must do.
Not out of fear, but out of love.
Not to earn God’s favor, but to stay in fellowship with Him.
Every moral question carries an “ought” behind it — that quiet knowing of what God is asking. And when we respond quickly, the heart becomes clear again. Peace returns. Fellowship is restored. And we find ourselves walking in the light with Him.
Breath PrayerSearch me, Lord…
and lead me into the light.
