John 13:17
“If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”
There is a difference between knowing truth and walking in it. Jesus said the blessing is not in understanding His words, but in doing them. Many of us know far more than we obey. We hear His nudges, His whispers, His gentle direction — yet we stay tied to the familiar places where we feel safe.
Chambers uses the picture of a ship tied to the dock. The dock is comfort, predictability, and the life we already understand. The ropes are the things we cling to — habits, fears, excuses, or the desire to stay in control. And the sea represents the deep purposes of God, the places where faith becomes real and spiritual discernment grows.
If we refuse to step out in obedience, God may allow circumstances to shake us loose. Not as punishment, but as movement. He loves us too much to let us stay tied to the dock when He created us for deeper waters.
Spiritual insight comes after obedience, not before it. When you obey the thing God has already shown you, He immediately shows you more. But when you delay, ignore, or reason your way out of obedience, something inside begins to dull. The moment you stopped responding to His voice is the moment your spiritual vision began to fade.
If you feel stuck, sluggish, or unable to discern God’s direction, look back. Where did you hesitate? Where did you say, “Not now”? Where did you choose comfort over obedience? That is where insight was lost — and that is where it will be restored.
There is also a counterfeit version of obedience. It looks spiritual, feels zealous, and often involves dramatic sacrifice — but it is self‑chosen, not God‑directed. It is easier to choose a big sacrifice than to quietly obey the simple thing God actually asked of you. But Scripture says, “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22). God is not impressed by what we choose to do for Him. He is honored when we do what He chooses for us.
And He warns us not to return to what we once were. Nostalgia, old habits, old identities — these things pull us back toward the dock. But God is shaping you into something you have never been. Obedience is the doorway into that newness.
Jesus said, “If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know…” (John 7:17).
Discernment is not for the curious — it is for the obedient.
Deeper knowing is not for the hesitant — it is for the willing.
If you obey what God has already shown you, He will show you more.
If you refuse, your spiritual sight will dim.
The next step is simple:
Do the last thing He told you.

Prayer
Lord, give me a willing heart.
Show me where I hesitated, where I delayed, where I held on to the dock.
Restore my spiritual insight as I return to obedience.
Lead me into the deeper waters of Your purpose.
Make me faithful to the things You have already shown me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
