June 18: Matthew 14:29-30 — Reckless Abandonment — (Today's Reading: My Utmost for His Highest)

A black and white image of stormy seas.

Reckless Faith in the Midst of the Waves

Matthew 14:29-30
". . . Peter . . . walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid . . ."

Peter recklessly abandoned all precaution and stepped onto the water, and began walking toward Jesus.

When Peter saw Jesus, he had no thought to his own preservation; he just threw caution to the wind and stepped out of the boat and went toward Jesus.

Then he began to notice his surroundings. The winds were wild, the waves were tremendous, and he lost his focus on the Lord, and down he went. He called out to Jesus for help...

... the Lord reached out a hand and saved him.

How many people are going to throw caution to the wind and step out onto a wild, wet sea of water? Not very many of us.

Even when we have our minds focused on the Lord, when troubles come and surround us... what do we do? We forget about the one holding us. We forget about the strong arm of the Lord that has never failed us. We forget He is the God that spoke — and the winds and waves fell silent.

Where is our reckless abandonment to just step out in faith and trust the Lord?

We let our surroundings and circumstances take center stage because we can physically see the trouble—but we cannot physically see the Lord. But this is when blind faith shines.

In the book of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego told King Nebuchadnezzar that their God was able to deliver them from the fiery furnace, but even if He did not, they still would not bow down to the king's golden statue. And you know the story... Jesus joined them in the furnace and they were unharmed. King Nebuchadnezzar called for them to come out of the furnace, and they emerged unscathed.

Peter did not drown, the young men did not burn... what more do we need to know about our wonderfully faithful Lord? Nothing at all. We have the Bible and all of the truths within it. We have our own life as witness to His might and providence... we see the miracles come alive in our own lives daily. The sun comes up, the sun sets, the moon and stars light the night skies, and our lives continue. The earth continues. The rains come, the seasons change... what more proof do we need?

The Holy Spirit within us witnesses to our own Spirit that He is here now. We need to gird ourselves with the truth and believe in Him. Trust Him. Ask Him to help us. Take His faith and stand in it.

Be resolute and determined that we will not waver in our desire to see this journey to the end. We must persevere. We must cling to the God we know and trust. He will bring us through anything that obstructs our path to glory.

Listen for His voice and when you hear it — even in the faintest way possible — surrender everything to Him. Respond immediately with reckless abandonment. Chambers says you will only recognize His voice more clearly through recklessness — being willing to risk your all.

When fear, circumstances, and doubt rise, let us throw caution to the wind and be reckless with our abandonment to Christ. Throwing our all upon Him we will ride out the storm knowing we are safe in His strong and caring arms.

Breath Prayer
Lord, help me release all caution; I abandon myself to You.

Present (John 14:9)

Today's Reading: My Utmost for His Highest Devotional of the Day — Home Page John 14:9 "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?" ...He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Philip stood in front of Jesus and still asked to see the Father. Jesus told him that seeing Him was seeing the Father. God was right there, and Philip didn’t recognize Him. We are the same way. God is with us, guiding us, steadying us, revealing Himself in quiet ways — yet we often look for something dramatic. Faith is trusting the God we cannot see, the God who is already here.   Philip wasn't asking out of rebellion.  Philip was asking out of longing — the same longing we feel. But Jesus’ response reveals something deeper:  “Have I been with you so long, and you still don’t know Me?” We want to see God with our eyes, hear Him with our ears, and sense His nearness the way we sense another person in the room. Meaning of Forgiveness: Key Bible Verses, Jesus' Command to Forgive, How to Forgive, and a Prayer

Devotional of the Day — Home Page Summary:  Meaning of Forgiveness Forgiveness is at the center of the gospel — Jesus commands it, models it, and makes it possible through His sacrifice. We are forgiven of every sin, even those not yet committed, and invited to receive His grace with childlike humility. Because God has forgiven us so completely, we are called to release grudges, let go of past hurts, and forgive others from the heart. Forgiveness does not require confronting anyone; it is a private act between you and God, a cleansing that frees your spirit. When forgiveness feels impossible, we can lay our pain at His feet and ask Him to remove the bitterness we cannot overcome alone. Sometimes the hardest forgiveness is toward ourselves, but Jesus meets us there too. God invites us to surrender every burden and receive His healing grace. Dec 2: 1 Peter 5:7 Do Not Worry (Daily Verse & Prayer)

Devotional of the Day — Home Page 1 Peter 5:7 "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you ." — KJV Worry has a way of creeping into our hearts, especially when life feels uncertain. Yet this verse reminds us that we are not meant to carry the weight alone. God’s care is not distant or abstract — it is personal, tender, and constant. Every detail of our lives matters to Him. When we release our burdens into His hands, we exchange anxiety for peace. It doesn’t mean the challenges disappear, but it does mean we walk through them with courage, knowi ng the Lord is holding us steady. Today, let us practice surrender by naming our worries and laying them before Him, trusting His love to carry what we cannot. Prayer Father, I lay my worries at Your feet.  Please give me calm for my mind and courage for my work, and remind me -   You hold every detail.  In Jesus' precious, holy name I pray, Amen.  I pray your day be free from worry and your mind calm, ~ Quil ...
