Today's Reading: My Utmost for His Highest
Matthew 5:30
"If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell"

Walking in Decisive Obedience

For years I thought this verse was literal, but I learned today that it is not. Jesus is using hyperbole — extreme exaggeration for emphasis — to teach the seriousness of sin. 

So, we do not need to amputate any limbs; but we do need to apply strict discipline to the habits and choices that sabotage our walk with the Lord. Some things may not be sin, but if they pull our focus from Him, they need to be limited or removed. 

Anything that weakens our obedience, distracts from our focus, stirs up old patterns, or dulls our spiritual sensitivity is not right for our new walk with the Lord.  These distracting activities must be removed with the strictest discipline if we are to grow and mature in Him. 

Every saint goes through this formation—learning new boundaries, letting go of old freedoms, becoming sensitive to the Spirit. 

Our new boundaries may seem strange to others, but we must not let that deter us. We must remain open to His teaching. God knows us better than we know ourselves, and He shows us what needs to be purged. Our conscious will alert us to what is wrong.

This is not punishment; it is protection. 
And protection is love, humility, and maturity in Christ. 

We already know what sin is and sin must be dealt with. Our most prominent sins are already known to us. But we must also examine our lives for anything that could become a hindrance to our walk with God— anything the enemy could use to sabotage our focus. 

For many of us, our cell phones are practically an extension of us. And if we spend more time with our phones than with God, discipline is needed. We may even need a simpler phone that removes the distractions that pull us away from Him. 

My phone is a distraction for me. But it is also my lifeline since I do not have a landline. So I deleted the gaming apps, and I am applying strict discipline to cut out the mindless doom-scrolling on Facebook and spend more time with my heart turned toward God—reading the Bible and praying.

Discipline leads to freedom in Christ. It can be difficult, but God's formation in us is intentional. We are being perfected — so that we might be perfect as our Father in Heaven is perfect. 

Align your life with Christ and walk with purpose toward the maturity and perfection He is forming in you.

Matthew 5:48: “You shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
