"He Himself has said . . . . So we may boldly say . . ."
There are moments when fear slips into our thinking before we even realize it — a quiet tightening, a shadow of “what if,” a sense of being small in the face of something we cannot control. Chambers reminds us that fear itself is not the failure. The danger comes when fear becomes the voice we listen to.
God has already spoken His assurance:
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
That is the foundation beneath every trembling moment. His words come first — our courage grows from His promise, not from our own strength.
We depend on God because that is how He designed us to live. Dependence isn’t a punishment — it’s the way we were created to function. Just like a branch can’t live without the vine, we can’t live well without God’s strength, wisdom, and presence. Our own courage runs out, our emotions change, and our understanding is limited. God knows that. He never expected us to carry life by ourselves. He wants us to rely on Him because He is the only One strong enough, steady enough, and wise enough to lead us. Dependence keeps us close to Him, and closeness is where peace, guidance, and courage come from. We don’t depend on God because we’re failing — we depend on Him because true life and strength flow from the Source. All of creation is sustained by His power and His presence.
“He gives to all life and breath and all things.” (Acts 17:25)
We are not told that we will never feel afraid. We are told what to do when fear rises:
Remember what God has said.
Take a deep spiritual breath.
Let His assurance steady your heart.
When it seems like there is no one to help, when circumstances feel larger than your strength, you can say this truth rooted in Scripture —
“The Lord is my helper this very moment.”
Human frailty makes difficulties look like giants and makes us feel like grasshoppers. But God’s presence does not shrink when we feel weak. His promise does not waver when our courage does. His nearness is not dependent on our strength.
The question becomes simple:
Are we listening to fear, or are we listening to the Father?
Courage is not the absence of fear.
Courage is the choice to believe God’s assurance in the middle of fear.
And because He Himself has said, we can boldly say:
“I will not fear.”
May His assurance be the courage that steadies you today.

Lord, when fear rises in my thoughts, draw me back to what You have already spoken.
Quiet the noise of my worries and let Your assurance settle over my heart.
Teach me to take a deep breath of faith, remembering that You are my helper in this very moment.
Strengthen me to walk forward with courage that comes from Your presence, not my own ability.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
